Privacy policy
In short
The Den apps connect to a Den server that you or someone you know runs. The developer of The Den does not run a service that your data goes to, does not collect analytics, and does not show ads. What you do in the apps stays between the app and the Den server you signed in to.
What the apps store on your device
- The address of the Den server you connect to, and the sign-in token that server gave your device.
- Your settings in the app, such as playback and subtitle choices.
Removing the app, or signing out, deletes these from your device.
What the Den server keeps
The Den server is software that its owner installs on their own computer. It keeps:
- Your account: user name and password (stored as a salted hash, never in plain text).
- What you watch: watch history, resume positions, ratings, favourites and your watchlist, so the apps can offer Continue watching and recommendations.
- The devices signed in to your account, and requests you make for new titles.
This information stays on that server. The server's owner (its admin) can see it and is responsible for it. The developer of The Den has no access to any Den server except the ones they run themselves.
Other services
- Google Cast: when you cast to a Chromecast, the app uses Google Play services to find the device and send it the video. Google's privacy policy applies to that.
- The Movie Database (TMDB): the Den server fetches film and TV details from TMDB, and the apps load posters and artwork straight from TMDB's image servers, which see your device's IP address as any website does. No account or viewing information is sent to TMDB.
- ntfy.sh: only if you choose to enter a personal ntfy.sh topic, the Den server sends notifications about your requests to that topic.
The apps contain no advertising, analytics or crash-reporting libraries.
The demo
"Try the demo" runs entirely inside the app with built-in sample data. Nothing you do in the demo is sent anywhere, except that the sample videos are streamed from their public hosts (the Internet Archive and public test streams).
Deleting your account
You can delete your account from the app (Account, then Delete my account), or on the web at /delete-account on your Den server. This removes your account, watch history, resume positions, watchlist and signed-in devices from that server. A server's admin can also delete any account on it.
Children
The Den is not directed at children. A server's admin decides who has an account and what each account may watch.
Security
Den servers use HTTPS, and the apps check the server's certificate. Passwords are never stored in plain text.
